Theory

The term cognitive/mind tool has been used extensively in the educational technology field as well as other related disciplines. This section traces the development of the concept of mindtools from its early theory (Jonassen, et al., 1998) to its definition and application by current scholars (Drew, 2019, Ge, et al., 2019, Pakdaman-Savoji, et al., 2019). The learning theories which underpin the concept of mind tools, as well as the theory of Constructivism (Papert, 1980) are also specifically outlined. Mindtools are further described as oppositional in structure to E-Learning, and the implications for mindtools in use in educational practice is proposed. The terms mind and cognitive tools are used interchangeably.
